The Story Behind the Story: Woodrow Cowher
Woodrow Cowher is one of those people who makes you slow down. Not because he asks you to—but because his presence invites it.
He grew up on a beef farm in rural Pennsylvania, took a detour through finance, and somehow found himself in the deeply intimate world of tattooing. But really, his journey has always been about the same thing: transformation.
Woodrow doesn’t just tattoo skin. He helps people reclaim it. Especially in his cover-up work, where he partners with clients to rewrite the story they carry on their bodies. There’s something sacred about that—something healing. He doesn’t approach it as an “artist” chasing ego. He approaches it like a craftsman. Someone devoted to the craft, to the conversation, to the meaning behind the mark.
Before he ever picked up a tattoo machine, Woodrow was painting—walls, canvases, magazine covers. Always chasing the sublime. That feeling of awe and expansion that words can’t reach. He carries that same intention into everything he does. Every tattoo. Every breath on the yoga mat. Every question he asks himself about what’s truly worth creating.
He titled this chapter Waking Up. And that’s exactly what it feels like—to witness someone peeling back the layers, sitting with discomfort, and deciding to be fully here.
This story reminded me that real art, the kind that moves us, often starts with how we choose to see ourselves. With how gently we’re willing to look inward.
Thank you, Woodrow, for your reverence. For your questions. And for reminding us that beauty, at its core, is an act of presence.
Thank you for being here
