The Story Behind the Story: Ellen

We sat down by the water, mid morning and talked about the kind of healing that doesn’t get shared enough. Not the solo journey. Not the retreat-in-the-woods, journal-it-out, burn-some-sage kind of healing. But the kind that happens when someone finally gets close enough to love you well—and it terrifies you.

Because when you’ve lived in survival mode for years, peace can feel like danger. Vulnerability can feel like exposure. And real love? It can feel like a threat when you’ve spent your whole life bracing for the other shoe to drop.

Ellen is a reiki practitioner and a mental health counselor. But beyond the titles is a woman who has done the real work. Alone. In the dark. For a long time. And now she’s learning how to do something even harder—let someone in.

She talked about what it’s been like to transition out of toxic dynamics and into a safe relationship. And how even when it's healthy, it doesn't mean it's easy. Because a good relationship doesn’t erase your wounds—it brings them to the surface.

This was one of the most honest conversations I’ve had about what it means to receive. To soften. To stop running. To stop managing your emotions in isolation and start letting them be witnessed.

Ellen reminded me that love isn’t always a lightning bolt—it’s a slow unraveling. A quiet return to the parts of yourself that stopped believing you were worthy of being held.

And maybe that’s what we all need more of—people who make us feel safe enough to stop performing healing and start living it.

Thank you, Ellen. For your tenderness. For your truth. And for showing us that healing in partnership is just as sacred as healing alone.

And, thank you for being here.
