Returning to Our Creative Roots
A Conversation with Dwight Jr.
There’s something incredibly moving about watching artists evolve, not just in their craft, but in who they are.
Dwight Jr. and I have known each other for years now. Our paths first crossed in Charleston, SC, and since then, we’ve both been on our own winding journeys of self-discovery, healing, and artistic expression. So sitting down for this conversation didn’t feel like an interview, it felt like a full-circle moment. A reunion of sorts.
What struck me the most was the way Dwight talked about his creative process now, how it’s shifted, deepened, softened. He spoke about reconnecting with his inner child, and how that return has been essential not only to his healing but to the art he creates. There’s something sacred about an artist who remembers who they were before the world told them who to be.
Hearing Dwight reflect on the making of his latest album Clutch through the lens of healing, self-awareness, and play reminded me why I started this series in the first place. It’s not just about showcasing people’s work. It’s about honoring the transformation that brings them there.
I love seeing other artists move in this direction, where art becomes an extension of the inner work, not a distraction from it. Where creativity is less about performance and more about expression. That’s what this conversation embodied for me.
Dwight is a melodic storyteller in every sense of the word, and this episode is a reflection of the courage it takes to return to yourself, and then share that journey with the world.
I’m honored to hold space for these stories. And I’m even more honored when the stories belong to people I’ve grown alongside.
